Offers counseling, psychiatric treatment and biofeedback to students. Services, brochures, group information and events. We, in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, are dedicated to excellence in education, clinical service, and research in psychiatry. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship: Psychiatry. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program is an integral part of UT Southwestern Medical School, Parkland Memorial Hospital, Children’s Medical Center Dallas, and the Dallas psychiatric community. We have the largest child and adolescent psychiatry training program in Texas, and the fifth largest program in the United States, and we still maintain a 1: 1 faculty- trainee ratio. This allows us to offer our fellows greater access to experienced and knowledgeable mentors than other programs. Nationally Recognized. The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has recently been named one of eight NIMH- funded Research Units for Pediatric Psychopharmacology and Psychosocial Interventions (RUPP- PI). This award reflects the field's recognition of our faculty as world leaders in psychopharmacology and psychosocial interventions. Extensive Training. The Fellowship Program offers extensive didactic and clinical training in psychodynamics. We are one of a small number of sites able to offer cognitive and behavioral therapy research support. We place great emphasize on developmental, biopsychosocial, psychodynamic, cross- cultural, family systems, and behavioral concepts. This includes knowledge of normal and pathological development, developmental neuroscience, developmental delays, and deviations due to environmental stressors, cultural differences, and psychopathology. Under the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training objectives, fellows and residents will: Perform evaluations.
Formulate diagnoses and treatment plans for developmental biopsychosocial problems. Develop and carry out comprehensive treatment plans for children, adolescents, and their families in all settings. Learn a broad spectrum of treatment modalities including psychopharmacology, individual, family and group psychotherapy, behavior management, and educational and community planning. Learn consultation/liaison skills in both medical and non- medical settings, including school consultations, and forensics and substance abuse/dependence centers. Develop the administrative and communication skills necessary for multi- disciplinary collaboration. Study current and seminal research and literature in child and adolescent psychiatry. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry subspecialty training requires two years beyond the general psychiatry residency. However, beginning this residency in the fourth post- graduate year can shorten the total length of training. The first year of the fellowship training would also count as the last year of general psychiatry. If pursuing this track, fellows should ensure that the first three years of their general psychiatry residency cover certain essentials mandated by the RRC and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for Adult Psychiatry.
